Alfred Bastien
Info
Alfred Bastien (Ixelles, 1873 - Uccle, 1955) was a Belgian painter who had education at the Académie royale des beaux-arts in Brussels. In his early carreer, Bastien painted landscapes and portraits in open air. He wanted to depict the 'perceived' directly as it was presented to him and as he experienced the impression on the spot. That is what we recognize in the painting above. The lady is the main subject of the painting and is emphasized by the white dress and by using more light in this section of the painting. Later in his career, Bastien founded "Section Artistique". Its members were called the "Frontschilders" as their job was to paint the situation and life on the front during the war.
