Helen Gerardia

Info

Helen Gerardia (Ekaterinoslav °1903 - New York °1988) was a Ukrainian-American painter. Born in the Russian Empire in the city of Ekaterinoslav (present-day Ukrainian Dnipro), Gerardia migrated to the United States where she studied under Hans Hofmann from 1946 to 1947. Working mainly in geometric abstraction, Gerardia exhibited an emphasis on negative space and only gradually incorporated color into her work, initially showing a clear preference for black and white. She founded her own art school, the Gerardia Workshop, where she taught a variety of mediums. Her work has been exhibited and collected by many museums, including the Smithsonian and the New York Met.
