Léopold Plomteux

Info

Léopold Plomteux (Flémalle, 1920 - Flémalle, 2008) was a Belgian painter who had education at the Académie royale des beaux-arts in Liège. He was one of the founding members of the avant-garde Cobra movement. Typical of abstract expressionism, the painting above is meant to truly confront you. On the one hand, Plomteux tried to convey the gestural aspect of creation on the canvas. On the other hand, it's the colors, strongly dominated by black and enhanced with red hues on a bright white background. The result is a masterpiece characterized by an intuitive and free manipulation of paint and spontaneous expression. In this, it's important not to always wonder what the painting really means. Plomteux said about this: "When you look at yourself in a mirror, do you have a similar question?" Rather, the goal was to create a direct physical and sensory experience of the painting.
